About Us
Sisson School, located at the base of majestic Mt. Shasta in far northern California, is a small school serving approximately 250 students in 4th-8th grades.
Featuring a beautiful, expansive campus; a rich music program offering both band and choir; and daily PE classes for 6th-8th graders, Sisson offers the quintessential small school experience, with plenty of enriching opportunities for student growth. Sisson boasts a staff of 35 teachers and paraprofessionals, including a school counselor, a Title I math intervention specialist, a dedicated RSP teacher, and an Opportunity Classroom for students who need extra support.
Most Wednesdays are early release days for students, with a 1 p.m. dismissal, so Mount Shasta Union School District employees can engage in professional development and collaboration.
Sisson has a full library, a pottery room and kiln, and a beautiful gymnasium. A yearbook is offered for sale each year, and student-led pep rallies celebrate student and athletic achievement. There are school dances for 6th, 7th and 8th graders at least twice a year, as well as "Fun Wednesdays," which offer students a chance to participate in different activities of their choice. Sisson’s cafeteria offers a daily salad bar and meals made with care and love. Parents and family members are invited to eat lunch with their students several times a year during our "Lunch on the Lawn" events, which encourages community connection.
Sisson’s sports programs, including cross country, volleyball, boys and girls basketball, cheerleading, and track & field, are always competitive and serve as a great way for our students to gain confidence, life skills, and athletic ability. A Winter Sports Program offers a unique opportunity for our students to enjoy skiing and snowboarding at the nearby Mt. Shasta Ski Park in the winter months.
Because Mount Shasta is located in such a beautiful place, teachers are able to take advantage of many nearby outdoor educational opportunities. Sisson Meadows, which is adjacent to the campus, is often used as an outdoor science lab. The Land Trust Community Garden is directly across the street, which is an excellent place for hands-on learning. Field trips include salmon spawning on the Shasta River; the natural wonders of Shasta Caverns; and cross-country skiing and ice skating in the winter.
Our fifth grade classes take an annual trip to Kidder Creek Outdoor School every spring, and the parent group CUBCO plans and executes an end-of-the-year celebratory 8th grade trip for our graduates in the spring. A heartfelt ceremony ushers 8th graders moving on to high school at the conclusion of each school year.
Although a separate entity, Boys & Girls Club of Greater Shasta offers after school programs on our campus, making it easy for working families to ensure their children are safe after school hours.
Sisson offers the feeling and benefits of a small school with many of the perks of larger schools. With a backdrop like Mt. Shasta, there isn’t another place quite like it.
