The Mount Shasta Union School District takes all allegations of political misconduct seriously.  We are aware that there may have been a situation in one or two classes within our district and are conducting an investigation.  We hold ourselves to the highest professional standards, and we are committed to addressing the situation appropriately.

This afternoon, we confirmed there has been a positive COVID test of a member of our school community. Because we've been operating largely in distance learning, there was no close contact between this person and students or their families. Please remember to continue to monitor yourself and your family for symptoms and take precautions like wearing a mask, washing your hands frequently, and maintaining a physical distance from those outside your household.

At noon today, the governor held a press conference announcing stricter regional stay-at-home orders that will be triggered if intensive care unit capacity in a region falls below 15%.  He divided the state into five regions, one of which is northern California.  They're saying our region is going to have less than 15% ICU capacity within just a few days. It is not the interest of the state to impact what is already going on with schools, and our capitol watchers are confirming that schools can continue to do what we're already doing.  They are working on getting this all in writing. MSUSD will be able to continue to operate our modified learning hub model that we are currently running, so today's announcement doesn't change anything for us, even as our region is moving into having less than 15% ICU capacity. Please reach out to your school's principal or your student's teacher if you have any questions, and continue to abide by best practices to keep you and your loved ones safe during this time.

The district will follow state guidelines for schools within counties that are in the purple category by bringing limited voluntary in-person learning hubs back beginning on Monday, November 30. Currently we will target special education students, Title I students, English learners, and Sisson Bridges students for possible in-person learning opportunities. Specialist teachers will make contact with families of these students to discuss scheduling and next steps.

This message is an update about when we will revisit returning to our hybrid learning model. Today, the state moved Siskiyou County into the most restrictive purple (or widespread) COVID tier. As a result, we must continue with the distance-learning-only model into December, and the board will revisit our reopening status at its board meeting on Monday, December 14. We continue to encourage those in our community to practice physical distancing, limit travel where possible, wash hands frequently, and wear masks when around people not in your household.
